AROUND THE GLOBE | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1940

Nine missing from convoy Germans claim to have annihilated; merchant cruiser credited with saving most of convoy.

Two days later, we hear that Coventry has been bombed, blitzed, virtually obliterated. Another city, far from Montreal, but near our hearts through songs – “Coventry Carol” – and sayings – “sent to Coventry” – and on and on.

New friends at the scm meetings also disturb my focus on Montreal West and its folkways. Cyril and Bill Powles were raised as sons of a missionary family in China and now treat Strathcona Hall as home. A very tall man from East Africa tells us he was a prince in Eritrea, his home country, before Italy invaded it, and will be a tribal chief if he can ever go home. Jimmy Panos is the son of the Greek consul; Charlotte Ferencz arrived recently with her family from Hungary. Tom Pavlasyk, like Sari, comes from Czechoslovakia. As the next week passes, the news intensifies the distress my European-based friends are feeling.
